NECE Conference 2013 – Online registration now open!

NECE

“The European Union and the Promise of Democracy: What can Citizenship Education and Civil Society contribute?”
14-16 November 2013, The Hague (the Netherlands)

Europe’s ongoing economic crisis has engendered a crisis of confidence in the European project and the costs and benefits of further European integration. The democratic deficit of the European Union has now become more and more visible and contributes to the backlash in support for the EU. It has also become very clear now that the economic crisis is dividing Europe and may ultimately lead to the break up of the EU.

Against this background this year´s NECE Conference will deal with resulting challenges for citizenship educators across Europe. With an eye to the elections to the European Parliament in May 2014, NECE 2013 will explore the topics of participation and democratisation and focus on the EU’s democratic deficit for discussing possible consequences and the role for citizenship education.

The conference in The Hague will offer opportunities for a critical debate on four levels:

  1. Scenarios and outlines for the future of the EU
  2. European civil society and the ‘democratic deficit’ of the European Union
  3. Role of citizenship education in the European crisis
  4. Practical approaches and projects of citizenship education

Opportunities to actively take part will be provided in numerous workshops, a world café and an open forum. Also, a project market for European models and good practice projects in citizenship education is offered.
At the end of the conference, participants are invited to draw up a public ‘Conference Paper’ with recommendations on the topic of democratisation and participation in the EU.

Conference language is English (without simultaneous translation).

There is no conference fee. The organisers do not cover travel and accommodation costs. Places are limited!

EU – which enlargement policy in the future?

20131015-web-banner-text-v3-2013The European Commission presented its “enlargement package” stressing the importance of the Copenhagen Criteria and the values of the European Union.

It insists on the rule of law, economic governance, democracy, the respect of fundamental rights and the settlement of conflicts between European countries. The development of the negotiation process with Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo, Macedonia (ARYM), Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania Turkey and Iceland was developed.

In its yearly follow-up report the Commission proposed granting candidate status to Albania which has been aspiring to this since 2009. The Commission is advocating taking up talks again with Turkey again, in spite of the repression in June.

OECD – Survey of Adult Skills (PIAAC)

OECDThe Survey of Adult Skills is an international survey conducted in 33 countries as part of the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC). It measures the key cognitive and workplace skills needed for individuals to participate in society and for economies to prosper.

The evidence from this Survey will help countries better understand how education and training systems can nurture these skills. Educators, policy makers and labour economists will use this information to develop economic, education and social policies that will continue to enhance the skills of adults.‌

European Elections 2014 – Information campaign

EE2014-CAMPAIGN_EN_STICKER_webThe European Parliament launched its institutional information campaign leading up to the European elections in 2014, aiming in particular to emphasise the political nature of Parliament, the impact of its actions on the lives of EU citizens and the new powers it enjoys following the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty.
These imperatives have paved the ground for an institutional campaign based on the notion that this time it’s different.

You are kindly invited to take an active role by using the free of charge one-stop-shop for down loading communication materials at your disposal via the newly created Download Centre http://www.europarl.europa.eu/downloadcentre.
